Formed in 2002, Piece Process is a group of artists, Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish and Arab, men and women, committed to exhibiting together in order to explore the Israel-Palestine conflict and the possibility of peace. Exhibiting in the US, we engage this country’s deeply inequitable involvement in the conflict and our personal ties to it.  We view the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian territories as one of the greatest obstacle to peace.   We share the belief that all co-existence must be based on the principles of human rights and equality. Our exhibitions are a call for awareness and deeper involvement by the American public. Piece Process is an affirmation in support of all the Israelis and Palestinians, Jews and Arabs, who seek a just and humane existence.

Thin Skinned Thick

Opening Reception :   Friday, November 9 th , 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Thin Skinned Thick envisions the terrain of human skin.

From November 2 nd through December 14 th, 2007, The Sol Mednick Gallery at the University of the Arts is pleased to present Thin Skinned Thick , a photography exhibit by local artist Amie Potsic.   The Opening Reception will take place on Friday, November 9 th from 6-8 PM.

Thin Skinned Thick is the result of a photographic investigation by the artist that explores the physical and psychological terrain of scarred human skin.   It tells a challenging and sensual story through a series of large-scale black and white photographs and audio recordings of her subjects speaking about themselves and their photographs. The exhibit's dynamic visual presentation combines with the courageous and conflicted spirits of her subjects to communicate an authentic sensitivity and daring.

As both a reminder of mortality and symbol of survival, a scar has the power to individualize, aestheticize, violate, and even enliven the person who bears it.   As a psychological and visceral trigger, the scar confronts us both personally and collectively.   It reflects advancements in medical technology while attesting to the body's innate ability to heal itself.   In this body of work, Potsic seeks to address the scar as a complex agent of strength, sensuality, conflict, and beauty.

Starting this project by photographing her family members, the series has expanded to include over 20 participants who are a variety of ages and races.   Ironically, the artist had no scars herself when she began this project but subsequently incurred her own in a bus accident in South America.   Potsic's own relationship to scarring has been seen in a body of work, entitled Doppelganger , which she exhibited at the Painted Bride Art Center in 2003.   Nathan Friedman, of Digital City, wrote, "Photographer Amie Potsic focuses on the corporeal, the raw, expressive body, broken down into live, creaturely components that come together to comprise a whole.   Both celebratory and critical, Potsic's work presents a complex, thoughtful, and visually original approach to a familiar topic."

Amie Potsic received her MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and is currently the Director of the Career Development Program at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. Ô Potsic has exhibited her work internationally at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, Medfoundart in Cagliari, Italy, the Museum of New Art in Detroit, the Woodmere Art Museum, National Constitution Center Museum, and The Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, Mission 17 in San Francisco, and 626 Gallery in Los Angeles.   She has held faculty appointments at the University of California at Berkeley and the San Francisco Art Institute and was recently invited to be the Distinguished Artist Lecturer at Ursinus College.   Her work has been published in and/or awarded by Gráficos Burti Brasil , The San Francisco Chronicle , The SF Weekly , The Bay Guardian , Zyzzyva , The Jewish Exponent , Art Matters , and The City Paper of Philadelphia .   Potsic has also been selected for inclusion in editions of Who's Who of American Women , WW of Higher Education, and WW in America.   To see more of her work, visit http://www.amiepotsic.com .

The Sol Mednick Gallery at the University of the Arts is located in the Media Arts Department at 211 South Broad Street on the 15 th Floor in Philadelphia.   Gallery hours are Monday - Friday 10 am - 8 pm, Saturday 10 am - 4 pm and Sunday 12 - 4 pm.
